Nitrogen Family: An Incredible Family in the Periodic Table
Introduction:
Well, all around us there are a lot of atoms, elements, and compounds but we can't notice them. Notice the world around us which influences you. By which we all are made and by which you feel alive. Atoms, elements, and compounds play an important role in this universe.
So, as they are so much important understanding them is very important. Here, comes chemistry which deals with the study of matter, its properties, and composition.
Nitrogen Family members:
Nitrogen Family members include Nitrogen, phosphorus, Arsenic, Antimony, Bismuth, and Moscovium.
In this, we discuss a lot about its members and explore their hidden properties. So, let's start:
Nitrogen:
Well, Nitrogen is air. No, I know that air contains other elements and compounds but nitrogen is 78%. That is why I say that air is mostly are nitrogen and I right. Well, you think that if nitrogen is 78% of air then we processed air and nitrogen for that sold and brought money. You are right but you are not the first who thought that large industries used the same process to make millions of dollars.
Properties of Nitrogen:
1. It is colorless, odorless, and tasteless.
2. It is less reactive at normal temperature.
3. Nitrogen is less dense than air.
Used of Nitrogen:
1. In food industries
2. Aircraft fuel system
3. Fire suppression system
Phosphorous:
Phosphorous is used in matches and fireworks and its property of phosphorescence is very unique seriously. Phosphorescence properties are mostly shown by phosphorus compounds which emit light after light exposure.
Properties of Phosphorous:
1. Phosphorous has severe allotropes like red phosphorous, white phosphorous, and black phosphorous.
2. White phosphorous has a garlic-like odor but red and black phosphorous are odorless.
3. White phosphorous is insoluble in water but soluble in carbon disulfide. Red and black phosphorous are insoluble in most solvents.
Uses of Phosphorous:
1. Used in matches and fireworks.
2. Used in fertilizers and agriculture.
3. Phosphorous is used in water treatment.
Arsenic:
Arsenic element is famous for its toxicity and poisonous nature. But arsenic also like other elements has unique properties that make them important in many different industries.
Properties of Arsenic:
1. Arsenic is metalloid meaning its properties are intermediate between metals and non-metals.
2. Arsenic is a highly toxic element.
3. Arsenic exists in many oxidation states like -3, 0, +3, and +5.
Uses of Arsenic:
1. It is mostly used in wood preservation.
2. It is mostly used in electronic instruments like solar cells etc.,
3. It is used in glass production.
However, due to environmental impact, its uses are reduced by other elements or compounds.
Antimony:
Antimony is an element with is very toxic but its uses can't be ignored in today's modern world.
Properties of Antimony:
1. Antimony and its compounds are very toxic and poisonous.
2. Antimony is metalloid which means its properties are intermediated between metals and non-metals.
3. Antimony oxidation states are +3,-3, +5.
Uses of Antimony:
1. Uses as flame retardation.
2. Antimony and its components are mostly used in batteries.
3. Use in glass industry.
Bismuth:
Bismuth is non-toxic and that why safe to handle.
Properties of Bismuth:
1. Bismuth shows unique properties in which it is brittle at room temperature and ductility at high temperatures.
2. Bismuth shows a unique property by which it expands on solidification.
3. Bismuth has no radioactive isotopes in its natural state.
Uses of Bismuth:
1. Bismuth is used in the pharmaceutical industry.
2. Bismuth is in the production of superconductor.
3. Bismuth is used in the cosmetic industry.
Moscovium:
Moscovium is a synthesized element known due to its radioactive nature. Very little information about this element is known.
Properties of Moscovium:
Not much is known about the properties of this element. But believe that its properties are similar to its other family members.
Uses of Moscovium:
No uses on an industrial scale.
Conclusion:
Each family in the periodic table is unique. And each element in chemistry plays an important role in the development of our society and technology. I hope you use your knowledge for the benefit of humanity.
